Graveside services for John Hiram Harland, 87, of Liberty City will be 11 a.m., Thursday, May 14, 2009 at
the Redwater Cemetery, Redwater, Texas. Mr. Harland passed away on May 5th,2009, at Good Shepherd
Medical Center surrounded by his loved ones.
He was born to Lee Roy and Zula Harland on August 26th 1921 in Redwater, Texas. After graduating from
Redwater ISD at the age of 17, he graduated from Texas A&M ,where he was a member of the corp, in
1943. He obtained the rank of 2nd lieutenant in the Army before receiving a honorary medical discharge in
World War II.
After discharge from the army, John started his career as a science teacher. He was a teacher in Miller
Grove, Roaring Springs, Lookeba-Sickles, Oklahoma, and finished his career at Sabine ISD as a biology,
physics, and chemistry teacher. John was a truly gifted teacher who demanded only the best from his
students. The answer was never important to Mr. Harland. It was imperative however that you know how to
obtain the answer. He was a life member NEA-TSTA, life member NRTA(AARP), member NCPSSM,
member TRTA(Texas) and obtained a BS, M.Ed, MS. John carried a Texas “Life Teaching Certificate”
which is unique in this state.
John Harland prided himself on being a “Jack of All Trades”. He was a builder, electrician, plumber, farmer,
rancher, but above all he knew how to mold young minds. After his retirement, he worked tirelessly for 15
years with an internet campaign to eliminate the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and Windfall Elimination
Provision (WEP) which unfairly penalizes the Social Security benefits of teachers and government
employees. His campaign drew the attention of Senator Phil Gramm and numerous national and Texas
legislators. John may have lost his voice with the retirement of Gramm, but he was still on the computer
“rattling legislators cages” (as he put it) just two days before his passing.
He is survived by his son, Linzy Harland of Cumby, Texas; a daughter, Angela Harland of Ft. Worth;
grandchildren, Jamison Kyle Russell of Forney, Ross Bradley Elmore of Ft. Worth; Tiffany Elizabeth Elmore
of San Marcos; Alleigh Rae Harland of Sulphur Springs; his adopted family Corine, Larry, Sandy, Wes,
Brandon, Sarah, Olivia, and Dustin Odom of Liberty City, and caretakers Debbie Owens and Ruth Calico of
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beryl Guy.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, evening May 13, 2009 between 7:00 and 9:00 p.m
