George Thomas Hamm  was born January 16, 1835, in Augusta County, Virginia, the second son of  William (1794
Augusta Co., Va. – 1880 Mo.) and
Mary Jane Clifton Hamm  (1805 Va. – about 1867 Mo.).  William and Jane’s
parents (
George Ham,  born in England in 1760; and  Mary Butler,  born in Scotland about 1769) were early settlers
in Augusta County, Virginia; west of the Blue Ridge mountains in the Shenandoah Valley.  In the 1850’s, George
arrived in Pettis County, Missouri, with his parents; and settled on bounty land which was awarded to his father as a
result of his service in the War of 1812.  George became a school teacher until the outbreak of the Civil War, when he
enlisted in Co. D, 7th Regiment of the Missouri State Militia Cavalry.  He served until March, 1865, mustering out as the
Battalion Sergeant.  On December 26, 1876, he married
Catherine (Kate) Isabelle Neal  in Pettis County.  They lived
on the family farm in Pettis County until moving to Cedar County; and eventually settled in Liberal, Barton County,
Missouri, in the 1880’s, where they remained until death – George, April 20, 1915; and his wife, Kate, December 2,
1928.  They had eleven children:
Thomas Fletcher Hamm, William Clifton Hamm,  Alicia Jane (Alcie) Hamm
Noble,  John Neal Hamm,  Martha Ann (Mattie) Hamm Welch Winters,  Mary Bell (Millie) Hamm Lucas,  Nannie
Nettie (Nan) Hamm Gardner,  Eva May Hamm Dressler,  Cora Elizabeth Hamm McLean,  Benjamin Harrison
Hamm,  Delilah Edith Hamm
